About Tipping in Turkey

Overview

Tipping is well-established in Turkey and an expected part of the tourist economy. Ten percent at restaurants is standard; in hammams (Turkish baths), tipping the attendant is an integral part of the experience. Check bills in tourist areas, as a service charge is sometimes pre-added.

When to tip

Tip at restaurants, with drivers on multi-day tours (Cappadocia, Ephesus, the Turkish coast), in hammams, at hotels, and with tour guides. At beach resorts in Antalya and Bodrum, tip expectations are higher due to concentrated international tourism.

How to tip

Check the bill for a pre-included service charge. If absent, 10% in cash or via card is appropriate. At hammams, tip the tellak (attendant) directly after the treatment — not at the front desk. Turkish lira in small denominations is practical for everyday tips; USD and EUR are also accepted in tourist areas.

Cultural context

Turkey's exchange rate volatility over recent years has significantly affected hospitality workers' real incomes, making tips in stable foreign currency (USD, EUR) especially valued. At major sites like Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and on Cappadocia balloon flights, guides are often highly educated, multilingual professionals who deliver rich historical content — a tip acknowledges that level of preparation and expertise, not just the transaction.
