About Tipping in Panama
Overview
Panama uses the US dollar as its official currency, and tipping norms closely follow US conventions. Ten percent is the minimum at restaurants; 15% is standard for good service, especially in Panama City's cosmopolitan restaurant and hotel scene.
When to tip
Tip at sit-down restaurants (10–15%), with taxi drivers (rounding up), hotel porters and housekeeping, spa staff, and tour guides — particularly for Panama Canal tours, rainforest excursions, and island trips to Bocas del Toro and the San Blas archipelago.
How to tip
USD cash is universally accepted and required for tips — there is no currency barrier. Leave tips on the table at restaurants or add to card payments. For Panama Canal tours and guided rainforest walks, $5–10 USD per person per day for the guide is the expected range.
Cultural context
Panama City is one of Latin America's most cosmopolitan financial hubs, and the restaurant and hotel scene reflects that international character — service quality is high and tip expectations align with the US and Western Europe. In contrast, the Guna Yala (San Blas) islands offer a radically different experience: the Kuna people operate their own autonomous tourism on a communal basis, and respectful engagement with community structures matters more than the tip amount itself.
