About Tipping in Armenia
Overview
Tipping is appreciated in Armenia and increasingly expected in tourist-facing restaurants and hotels in Yerevan, which has developed a vibrant café and dining scene. At local spots and away from the capital, smaller tips or none at all are the norm.
When to tip
Tip at sit-down restaurants in Yerevan (10% is becoming standard), with taxi drivers (rounding up), hotel housekeeping and porters, and tour guides for Geghard monastery, Garni temple, Lake Sevan, and Tatev Monastery cable car experiences.
How to tip
Armenian dram in small denominations is the practical currency; USD and EUR are accepted in tourist areas but dram is preferred for everyday tipping. At restaurants, leave cash on the table or ask the server to include a 10% addition. For private guides on day trips from Yerevan, AMD 3,000–5,000 per person is the appropriate range.
Cultural context
Armenia's large diaspora in the US, France, and Russia has filtered tipping norms back to the homeland — younger Yerevanis are comfortable both giving and receiving tips. Yerevan's restaurant scene has expanded dramatically and the quality now rivals many Western European cities; a 10% tip genuinely motivates staff in a competitive market and acknowledges the craft behind Armenian cuisine and hospitality.
