About Tipping in Lisbon
Overview
Hospitality wages in Portugal are regulated differently than in the United States, meaning service staff rely much less on gratuities to make a living wage. While tipping is always welcomed as a sign of appreciation, omitting a tip will not cause offense or result in poor service.
Local context
Neighborhoods catering heavily to international visitors have adapted to foreign tipping habits, but traditional tascas and neighborhood spots operate entirely without expectations of extra money. Locals judge tipping purely on the quality of the meal and the attentiveness of the server.
Practical tips
Always carry a few small euro coins because card readers rarely prompt for a tip amount and cash remains the most efficient way to reward your server. Check your bill to ensure a service charge has not already been added before leaving additional money on the table.
